“Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results” Willie Nelson
Those who have had hypnotherapy sessions with me may have noticed that I like to take my notes with a fountain pen. Some people call it old school but it’s something I have done since I was in school. Why am I telling you this you may wonder? Well, I was looking for a new ink colour recently and came across this great instagram account (#bluebusdrifter) and they had a popular ink colour illustrated with a quote by famous artist Willie Nelson and it spoke to me about how hypnotherapy can help to do this.

Replace negative thoughts with positive ones
It is easy to say that “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results”. A question that often follows an inspirational statement like this is “But how do I do that?” and “If I could do that, I wouldn’t have this problem”. And that is where hypnotherapy comes in as a helpful tool to help you with the things that you know you need and want to do but don’t know how to do it.
How does hypnotherapy help with this?
Our subconscious mind receives many messages from the environment around us during our lives, and this is especially vital during our younger years when we are forming our belief systems. Later on, we may want to adjust messages to what is more appropriate to us at that stage of our lives and hypnotherapy can be a wonderful and effective choice. Therefore, whether we have bad habits that need adjusting, whether we need to change messages that have caused a phobia or if we need more self-confidence, a common theme with hypnotherapy is getting to those messages and replacing them with what is more desirable to the individual.
Consider this…
If you think about a computer that needs an update in order to work properly, you do not run the old version and the new version of your software at the same time. You would install an update, as running both software versions would mean the computer couldn’t really run either version effectively. This is an analogy I often use as most people have some experience of using computers and it is not dissimilar to our minds in many ways.
We cannot expect to feel as we want to when our subconscious mind has one message installed and then you tell it another. For example, if you had an experience that made you wary of dogs and as time goes on you realise you are being too cautious, you may decide that you don’t want to fear dogs any more. But that old message is still running alongside this new message and there can be confusion at the subconscious level over how it is supposed to react. There are lots of approaches a hypnotherapist can take to help you to replace your negative thoughts about dogs into positive ones!
